Network Scan

Network scanning and diagnostics services

A network scan is a short, focused engagement — typically one to two days — where we take a fresh look at your network, its architecture, and its surrounding infrastructure. Think of it as a health check for your network. We come in, assess what’s there, and give you an honest, practical view of where things stand and where improvements can be made.

When a Network Scan Makes Sense

You don’t always need a full design or implementation project. Sometimes you just need a second pair of experienced eyes. A network scan is ideal when:

  • Something doesn’t feel right — Intermittent issues, unexplained outages, or performance that doesn’t match what the hardware should deliver
  • You’ve inherited a network — New to the role or the organisation and want to understand what you’re working with before making changes
  • You’re planning a change — Considering a migration, refresh, or expansion and want to understand the current state before committing
  • You need a sanity check — Your team has a design or architecture in mind and wants an independent review before proceeding
  • You suspect technical debt — The network has grown organically over the years and nobody is quite sure what’s configured where or why

What We Look At

In a short engagement we can cover a surprising amount of ground. We focus on the areas that will give you the most actionable insight:

Architecture and topology

We review the overall network architecture — how sites connect, how traffic flows, where redundancy exists (and where it doesn’t). We look for single points of failure, suboptimal routing, and design patterns that may have made sense years ago but no longer fit the current environment.

Configuration review

We pull device configurations and look for common issues — inconsistencies between devices that should match, deprecated features still in use, security weaknesses, spanning tree misconfigurations, routing anomalies, and the kind of subtle configuration mistakes that sit quietly until something fails.

Operational readiness

Beyond the technical configuration, we assess how the network is managed. Is there monitoring in place? Are configurations backed up? Is there documentation? Could the network be recovered quickly if a device failed? These operational factors often have as much impact on reliability as the technical design itself.

Automation opportunities

We always look at where automation could improve operations. Even in a short engagement, we can identify quick wins — tasks that are being done manually that could be automated, data that could be collected programmatically, or processes that would benefit from a NetDevOps approach.

What You Get

At the end of a network scan, we deliver a clear, practical report covering:

  • Findings — What we observed, with specific details and evidence
  • Risks — Issues that could cause outages, performance problems, or security exposure
  • Recommendations — Prioritised, actionable improvements ranked by impact and effort
  • Quick wins — Things that can be fixed immediately with minimal risk
  • Next steps — Where a deeper engagement (design, implementation, or automation) might be warranted

We don’t bury findings in jargon or deliver a 200-page document that nobody reads. The report is concise, honest, and written so you can act on it straight away.

A Low-Commitment Starting Point

A network scan is often the first step in a longer relationship. It’s a low-risk, low-commitment way to work with us and see how we operate. There’s no obligation to take things further — if your network is in good shape, we’ll tell you. If there are issues, you’ll have a clear picture of what needs attention and can decide how to proceed on your own terms.

Get Started

If your network could use a fresh pair of eyes, contact us to arrange a network scan. We can typically schedule within a few days and have findings back to you within a week.
